In honor of my 32nd Birthday I decided to try something a little different. Who other to tell you about the day that I was born then my the woman who birthed me herself. So without further a due I present to you the story of my birth as told by my mom.
......................................................................................................................................
Let me introduce myself, I am Christy’s mom and she has asked me to do a guest blog for her. Why you ask? Well today is her birthday and she would like my take on the day she was born but it’s not that easy where do I start…You have to understand it was the 70’s, late 70’s to be exact, and what was then is not now... So here is the “full story” from MY VIEWPOINT ONLY and only the parts I remember.
LABOUR PAINS AND ALL THAT STUFF
Monday, July 30, 1979 started out like any other day. Would today be the day? I was already overdue and getting use to this. Your Dad was getting ready for work and I remember standing in the hallway on the way to the bathroom and thought I’d peed my pants. Then I moved – and no, way too much for that. Go figure, you know what it is and you still say “ I think my water broke” and you look for confirmation.
I know we got ready, we grabbed the overnight bag, and I had what they called “my walking papers”. I don’t remember the car ride to the hospital but I do remember it seemed to take forever to fill in the papers so I could go to the labour room. Your Dad got me there and then he went back to work with the assurance he would be called when the “time” got closer. Again that was a sign of the times. As a matter of fact, fathers being in the delivery room was still relatively new and not many were brave enough to take the opportunity. We had talked about it but your Dad was very hesitant to go in and had not really planned on it.
So what I remember about the labour... my mom was there for a part of it, your Dad’s mom was there for a part of it and I was on my own for a part of it. I did believe in the panting during the contractions and to this day would strongly advise people to use that method. Oh I forgot, these days epidurals are easily available and the norm – no need to pant.
I entered the hospital shortly after 8 am and things did not progress that quickly until around 2 pm. Once I started dilating, I don’t think it stopped. You had a similar experience with Grady which is why I remember telling her nurse, “she needs to be checked right now!”.
DELIVERY
So someone (again wasn’t me) called your dad and I think they had already wheeled me down to the delivery room. I remember someone telling me when your Dad arrived and asked where I was. They suited him up in those classic blue booties, a gown and a mask and voila – he was in the delivery room. They allowed him to sit close to my shoulder so he didn’t have to watch anything. They asked if it was okay if some interns watched the delivery. At this point I didn't care. I think they were behind me as I was never really conscience of them being there. I guess they were expected to watch in the mirror as all the nurses and the doctors were at the other end.
The delivery - well I pushed harder than I ever have and when you came out I remember for a minute I was so scared as I thought you weren’t breathing. You were a beautiful but big baby girl, born at 4:30 pm, weighing in at 9lbs 4 oz.and 22 inches long. And then I got to hold you for the first time and you cannot find words to express how you feel. So much love and joy and pride you might explode. Despite what I know, being pregnant and giving birth remains a miracle to me.
I remember when they wheeled me out of the delivery room both grandmas were there and then it hit me and I cried for happiness and got uncontrollable shakes (I remember this happened to you when Cooper was born). Grandma Rice was especially happy as this was her first grandchild and a girl to boot. She had 2 boys so I think it was extra special for her.
HOSPITAL STAY
Here are the first pictures taken of you the day you were born around 7pm with a polaroid camera (Remember, develops before your eyes in 60 seconds).
I believe to finish the story off you need to realize that we did not get discharged and let home right away. Oh no it was 5 days and I was so ready to go home by then. What I remember about the hospital stay is that you were allowed to stay in the bassinet during the day but had to go back in the nursery for the night, although they did make rounds with the babies and I would be woken up in the middle of the night so I could feed you.
I was asked if they could use you for the bath demonstration which we had to attend. At first I was flattered but watching was a bit harder than I had anticipated. They wanted to use you as you were such a large baby and so much easier to handle. You looked like a giant next to a 7lb baby.
You were taken home in some big white bucket seat that sat in the front seat and was rented for free for a 6 month period from the YWCA.
MEMORY LANE
Christy, it is difficult to know how to end this story. And they lived happily ever after……….
No - life is a journey and I have been honored to take that journey with you. What a privilege to be there and play a part in the birth story of both your boys. Who would know that I could make it all the way there both times and not miss a thing.
I look at your baby picture and think how could I know then what I know now. I leave you with my words written in your baby book.

As I write this Christy is 3 weeks old. She sure has changed since her birth. She keeps me busy all day long but she is as good as gold at night. At this point, I think we are finally getting use to each other. Daddy has been working up north for the last two weeks so I must admit I do spend a lot of time at my mom’s. She has been a great help, I hope that I will be as much help to my daughter when she is older.A later entry in her baby book read:
As I bring this book up to date I must write here that at 2 years old, Christy is a very independent little girl. She is learning to talk quickly now, she just loves books. Her favourite sayings have been “go away” and “No way” which she uses a lot.HAPPY BIRTHDAY CHRISTY – I LOVE YOU

Thank you so much for taking the time to document my birth story. And most of all for birthing all 9 pounds and 4 ounces of me without an epidural. I owe you big time.
