Date Night

Not with my husband.  With my kids.

James was out for the night so me and the kids loaded up to head to the mall.  I really wanted to check out the new, and first, Nordstrom store to open in Canada, but mostly the kids were driving me crazy and the quickest way to turn their moods around is to take them out and about.

On the way to the mall we decided that we would do my return first, the very reason we headed to the mall, followed by food court for supper.

On the way to do my return we passed by Helly Hansen where I had a 25% coupon so we grabbed Grady his winter jacket and ski pants.  We don't want to be stuck without like we were earlier this month!  Score!  Something off the to list!

Then I may have mislead them with where the food court was and strolled though  the hidden reason I wanted to go to the mall.

Wow is all I can say.  It is a beautiful store.  I didn't stop and look at one item.  The kids and I walked in, to the escalator, rode down, and vacated the store.  It felt like I was in a different city.  They really outdid themselves and didn't cut any corners.  From what I understand, they only increased prices for exchange, which I believe as the day the store opened they changed their shipping policy on the website to $10 flat shipping over $100.  Can I get a Yippee???  That is great news in my books!

As we headed out, the kids changed their minds and wanted to go to the lego store.  While I was standing there bored watching the kids build lego men the worker asked me if we wanted  a free one.  All we had to do was clean up one whole side of the station by separating the men by all their little pieces.

We earned ourselves 2 free men from our hard work.  Apparently this is the case all the time so we will most likely be earning lots of free men in our future!  Dont' forget to try it at your local Lego store!

After the lego store, we finally made it to food court. Grady had A&W, but Cooper wanted a hot dog so we made our way to Dairy Queen for his.  Then we had to have a pee break.  Then we finally made it to Taco Time for my veggie burrito.  Anyone who has dined at food court with me knows that Taco Time is my fast food restaurant of choice! Yum!

I treated the kids to a carousel ride.

Finally, we made our way to Aldo to buy this plaid scarf.  I regretted not buying it when we were in Edmonton and Deena bought one and I have been admiring online ever since.  So glad I bought it as I wore it the very next day for family picture.  #no regrets

The other item I regret buying is what I called the grandpa cardigan from Simons in Oatmeal.  The photo doesn't do it justice..  I am headed back to Edmonton at the end of October and if I still want it, it may come home with me.

We left the mall after about 3 hours and I had such a lovely night.  I was at my happy place, having supper with my 2 little men, no fighting, no screaming, but lots of laughs.  It isn't every day that I can say we had a successful trip, but this one is one for memory lane.

Lifestyle Sistas - favorite pictures I've taken

This week was super hard for me.  I am by no means a photographer, nor do I pretend to be.  With James away most of the past week, one night after the kids went to bed, I sat myself down at the computer to look for my fave pictures that I have taken and my fave pictures of myself that is coming up in a few weeks.  It was tough.  What I put together were a few of my favorite pictures where I just happened to be behind the camera. I noted that they fell in one of 3 categories....

1.  Pictures of kids.

Of course many of my favorite pictures were ones of my own kiddos.  I remember the day at Calaway park that Grady went into the ball pit for the first time.  They took this out the next summer, probably because it is a germ pit, and Grady still from time to time asks why there isn't a ball pit anymore.  The look on his face if pure joy.

This photo of Cooper was just taken last Halloween.  He loved his costume so much and every time he became 'Mike' from Monsters Inc. he beamed.

I also noticed that I take lots of pics of my brother and his kids.  I love this one taken at Blaire's graduation.  I didn't have kids yet so I spent lots of time taking pics of my oldest niece Madison, who is now nine.  I printed this for my bro in black and white and gave it to him shortly after.

This one is of my bro and his youngest, Kiptyn.  I love the way that James' head just touches the tip of his son's head.  After 3 daughters, I know he treasures this father son relationship.

2.  Water pictures

I've always looked at getting the perfect water entry photo as a challenge.  I love capturing the look on kids faces as the water splashes up in their faces.  I have oodles of these photos and love them all.

Madison

Grady, Age 2

3.  Perfect Lighting

I love this picture of the boys taken at sunset on our last vacation to Maui.

I took this picture of the Eiffel tower years ago.  This is the unedited (because let's be serious, I don't really know how to edit) version and the result is beautiful.  If I were guessing, I bet the flash went off and created the blue sky.   I framed this picture and had it on display in my family room for many years.

As you probably noticed, most of my favorite photos are my favorite because I love the people in them.  I am not big on scenery shots for the most part.  I take pictures because I want to remember the people in the picture.  I guess you could say I am an emotional photographer.  Is that a thing

Wacky Wednesday

I have bloggers block.  I just couldn't come up with something to blog about today, so instead of fretting, I'm going to make this quick and give you a few mid week randoms, after all, its been a while since a five on Friday post!

{one}  I am Cooper's school chauffeur for the next few weeks so rather than taking one day off a week I am taking 2 half days.  Today I am meeting up with Stacey for a walk.  Exercise and sunshine on my morning off = perfection.

{two} Grady is playing timbits hockey this year.  He is very excited to find out his team and it is taking forever.  We were supposed to know last week and have skate times this weekend but the teams were not released so we had the weekend off.  While I am sure I will be sick of spending my weekends in the rink soon enough, for now, I am super excited for my new role of Hockey Mom!

{three}  Grady is doing great with the adjustment to Grade 1.  I've heard from several people that the full day can be tough on them but I have not noticed Grady being more tired unfortunately.  I do notice that he eats a lot.  He comes home from school, after eating his full lunch, and eats sometimes 3 pieces of toast.  It must be growth spurt time!

{four}  Mr. Cooper's stitches are healing up nicely.  After just about 2 weeks it was still looking terrible on the weekend.  We went to the pool and I noticed that all of a sudden his cut was looking great.  Apparently all the crusted blood must have come off in the water as he wasn't letting us go near it at home!  I was happy about this since we have family pictures on Sunday!

{five}  I am not sure I have mentioned it on the blog or not, but we have decided to not put Cooper in kindergarten next year for various reasons.  His November birthday being the biggest reason.  We are looking for a 5 day preschool program for him next year and it is proving to be difficult. Ideally I'd like him to be with the same group of kids for all 5 days and apparently the demand isn't that high.  Can you believe that I am attending an open house for his preschool for next year this weekend.  That is just craziness.  Sometimes it seems like it is harder to get into preschool than kindergarten!

Happy Hump Day!

Wonderful Fall Weather

After nearly a week of winter temperatures, we've been blessed with perfect fall weather.

The colors in and around the city are beautiful.  This one was taken in the parking lot of our local rec center.  The beauty of fall is all around us now.  Have I mentioned fall is my favorite season?

While James was away, I brought the kids down to Griffith Woods a pathed area a mere 5 minutes from our house but we had never been.  It may have been the first time but certainly not the last.

A hike in the middle of the city, yes please!  Grady was using his hiking stick to draw a trail so we didn't get lost.   What a great way to spend a fall afternoon.

On top of this, we skated, swam, and rock climbed at the rec center.  The kids and I keep ourselves busy while James is away!  All in all a great day except the major melt down as we left the rec center at 7 with no supper.....  Lesson learned.

Lifestyle Sistas - places I want to see before I die

I do not have the travel bug.  I repeat, I do not have the travel bug.  Yes, I like to travel, but mostly to places I am familiar with and have been before and know I like.  I'm like that with food to.  I have a favorite at every restaurant and hate to deviate in case I don't like it.  I digress.....

Right off the top, I thought of 2 places I would like to visit.

{one}  The maritime provinces

Whenever I think of the maritimes, there is always a light house.
The pictures look beautiful, and I think I'd like to go in the fall when the leaves are changing.  It is in my own country and looks so foreign to me from out west.  I want to take the kids, so it will be a place that we travel to when the kids are older.  I also figure that once we get there I'd like to stay a while....  For the record, when I went looking for a photo, it made me want to go even more.

{two}  Venice
I have this silly idea that James and I will ride the boats together holding hands. So romantic.  This is a trip I would like to do without kids and add in Rome and Cinque Terre.

This is where I took to google to see what things other people wanted to see before they die.  While the pictures looked beautiful, I have no desire to go to Turkey, China, Vietnam etc.

{three}  African Safari

While I am pretty sure I am to chicken to actually follow through with this one. I think I'll add the safari to the list as a place I would like to go but am too scared.  Kind of like cruises.  I would like to go on a Disney cruise, but am too scared.  I digress again.....

For four and five, I'll add to places that were on my list that I have knocked off.

{four}  Europe

I always said I wanted to go to Europe before I had kids as I was scared that if I didn't go before I would never go.  We stopped in London on the way to Greece for our honeymoon and I enjoyed it.  We could have used more days, but I loved the architecture and the self guided tour of Buckingham palace was my favorite.

{five}  The Eiffel Tower

I was fortunate that as part of my job a few years back I went to Algeria (northern Africa) and I could choose whether I wanted to travel through Paris or London.  I chose to fly though Paris and spend a weekend to see the Eiffel Tower which had been on my bucket list since I was little. I can't explain it, it just was.  It didn't disappoint. I think we will go back one day as James hasn't seen it. I loved Paris.  I walked everywhere and just really enjoyed the sights.  Notre Dame took me off guard and was so breathtaking.  I happened to be there on a Sunday and you could walk around during mass.  That was odd, but added to the beauty of it all.

I have a great photo of the Eiffel tower that I took, but I think I'll save that for the next topic... favorite pictures I've taken.
So while you see that I do not have that travel bug that many have, I've still managed to tick a few places off my list and have 2 manageable places to visit in the coming years.  In the mean time, I will enjoy visiting Maui, my vacation spot of choice!
What are the places on YOUR bucket list?

Work Wear Challenge - Week 4 and Girls trip 2014

Day 13Cardigan + Printed Button Down + Black Pants + Neutral or Color Block Heels or Flats
We are now in the home stretch with the last few days of outfits.  I love me some polka dots but not loving how the shirt looks in the pics.  I saw that old navy had a collared one and thought I may give it a try.  Good price and {gasp} a collared shirt!  Cooper had my phone and changed the setting on the camera so the coloring is a little off.  I took the photos anyway before someone walked in!
Day 14.  Cardigan + Sheath Dress + Leopard Belt + Statement Earrings + Neutral or Color Block Heels or Flats
I can't decide on this outfit.

 I

I can't decide if I don't like the dress or the combo of the shirt and dress, or maybe it is the scarf.  I just don't love it.

Day 15.  Blazer (Optional) + Solid Blouse + Jeans + Long Necklace + Leopard Flats

I had already decided to wear this outfit before I got the email and I was happy to see that I somewhat fit the bill.  I eyed up this blazer last fall at Smart set for months before snagging it for $28 on black Friday. Then I took it to the seamstress to get the sleeves shortened and it was $30.  I really need to learn to sew!

My happy face was due to the fact that on Friday we also embarked on our 9th consecutive girls weekend.  This (and most years) was in Edmonton, home of the largest mall in North America.  Here is a tid bit I grabbed from Wikipedia:
West Edmonton Mall (WEM), located in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, is the largest shopping mall in North America and the tenth largest in the world (along with The Dubai Mall) by gross leasable area.[2][better source needed] The mall was founded by the Ghermezian brothers, who immigrated from Iran in 1959.[3] It was the world's largest mall until 2004.[1]
West Edmonton Mall covers a gross area of about 490,000 m2 (5,300,000 sq ft).[1] There are over 800 stores and services[4] and parking for more than 20,000 vehicles.[5] More than 24,000 people are employed at the property. The mall receives 32.2 million visitors per year; it also attracts between 90,000 and 200,000 shoppers daily, depending on the day and season. The mall was valued at CAN$926 million in January 2007.[6]
At times on Saturday it felt like 90,000 people were in the mall.  We parked the car on Friday afternoon and re-emerged from the mall on Sunday morning.  We didn't leave the mall once.  Our hotel was there, we drank, shopped, and ate, all at the mall.    Maybe that is why the mall is my happy place?

I was so busy having fun that I didn't take any pictures.  But you can always relay on Deena to put a camera in your face!  It has been a while since all of us were able to make it as pregnancies and babies often get in the way (we were missing Carmen this year).  I am hopeful that next year, our 10th annual, we will have all of us present.

I am so grateful to have this bunch of friends that go way back.  They remember me as young as 5 years old.  We have history.  History that is hard to rebuild with others.   No matter how long passes between our visits it is like we haven't skipped a beat.  We still talk about the same things and reminisce about the same stories.  Some things never get old.  Just like the annual girls trip.
For the record, this year was the year of the legging.  I alone bought 3 pairs plus 2 pairs of work 'leggings'.  Expect to see these bad boys in the months to come.  My clothing is confused as we had winter for a few days, I packed up all the summer stuff and now summer is back.  Do I dig out the shorts again?

Just when I have all this great fall wear, mother nature switches it up again and sunner comes back. I'd rather this than snow any day!

Proud Moment

The other day, Grady asked me if he could wear his bunny hug.  I stopped in my tracks.  I thought I had stopped using this term after being in Calgary for over 10 years.  I obvioulsy haven't though if my dear son is using this term.  It certainly doesn't come from his father.  I couldnt't have been prouder.

Now for those of you who do not know this term.  The photo below shows a bunnyhug, or a hoody as the rest of the world calls it.

According to the Urban Dictionary, bunny hug is defined as:

A hooded sweatshirt with a pocket across the belly.

No one but Prairie people in Canada know what this
word means.
A fleece, pull-over style sweater with a large pocket on the front, and a drawstring hood. Is almost exclusive to Saskatchewan; outside the province is usually known as a hoodie. Weirdos.
A regional variance on Hoodie, specifically Saskatchewan, Canada.
I love that although Grady was born and raised in Calgary that he still has a bit of Sasky in him, just like his momma!

Oh and can I also add that Grady calls it Monkey in the Middle.

Snow and stitches!

What a day Tuesday was!   It was September 8th and looking outside it could have been December!  We went form 27 and sunshine on Sunday to frigidly cold and wearing winter jackets on Monday morning.  Lucky for me, it was my day off and I got to walk Grady to school.  I took the time to put on my rubber boots and Grady did not!  I had to bring them to the office after as believe it or not, they went outside to play twice in the snow!  Not only that, after walking him to school, I had to change jackets to drive Cooper because I was soaking wet.

When I picked Cooper up from school that morning, the first thing he asked was if he could go and shovel.  I nicely tried to explain to him that there wasn't enough snow to shovel, so after we got Grady from school, he happily shovelled the grass instead.

Grady made a huge snow ball that they named Big Buffy.  Don't ask.

I turned this negative into a positive and put on my new fall jacket and warm scarf and watched the kids play from the garage.  They stayed out there well over 30 minutes and didn't fight once.  That must be a record.  I forced them to come inside to eat around 5:30.

As you can see, it didn't just snow, it snowed a lot.  Weather is very strange in my neck of the woods, 0 and snowy on Monday and sunny and 20 a week later, I hope.

This is where the night got a little wild.   After supper, Grady kicked a ball that hit the TV and knocked some cords out.  I was trying to deal with the TV situation and the kids were playing catch with a blanket.  Grady through the blanket to Cooper and cooper slid right off the couch and into the corner of our speaker.

He was screaming and I ran to him, picked him up, and there was blood everywhere.  I carried him off the carpet and onto the lino where I sat with him on the floor.  Grady asked if there was any blood and I don't even remember what I told him.  I called for Jasmin (James wasn't home) and she came up and helped me try to figure out where the blood was coming from.

I had no idea how much the head bleeds, but as I mention the 'incident' to others, apparently it is common knowledge.  Wound to the head = lots of blood.  We finally located the cause and realized it may need stitches.  This is when I realized Grady was MIA.  I handed Cooper over to Jasmin, he was still crying but not screaming, and went to look for Grady.

Grady is my sensitive kid and I knew that he was probably feeling bad.  I found him sitting in the living room looking out the window.  We talked about how it was an accident and he told me he thought it was his fault, then he thought about it and decided it was more Coopers fault.  He was very concerned about Cooper and whether he was going to be OK.  I explained to him that I needed to take Coop to the doctor but that it wasn't his fault and that he would be fine.  It was hard to leave him behind knowing that he felt bad.  He tried to stay up and wait for us but we were too late.

The nurse put some numbing cream on his head when we arrived and wrapped him with some gauze so he wouldn't touch it.  He took it pretty well.

We spent hours playing in the play area and watching TV.  The new Children's Hospital is amazing and such a great place for kids.  They had plug ins to charge your devices which I used almost the whole time I was there.  Of course when I needed my cell phone - it was at 10% battery life....

We got called back and then waited some more.  By this point we had removed the gauze as it kept falling in his eyes.

The actual procedure took about 5 minutes.  The doc said that for superficial cuts she would use glue but that Coopers had a good gash that would require 3 stitches.  It hurt him a little and whimpered a bit but overall he did really well.  She gave him a Popsicle after and we headed home!

So while I had plans to watch bachelor in paradise, I spent the entire night at the ER. An unexpected night that I hope not to repeat any time soon. The snow and the stitches!

Work Wear Challenge - Week 3

Day 8 - Solid Blouse + Printed Pants + Long Necklace + Black Heels or Flats = FAIL!
I was off again today and I had a lovely outfit planned.  Printed Jeans, a bright pink top, and the accessories all laid out.  Then Wednesday morning came, and it was raining.  It was Cooper's first day of preschool, so I planned to work out during my 'alone' time.   I wore this outfit to crop him off, which is essentially my workout wear covered by my blardigan.  Half blanket, half cardigan.
Then spur of a moment, I friend asked Cooper and I to go to the pool.  So we did, in this outfit.  Then home for supper and I went to a second exercise class in the evening after the kids were in bed, you know, since I could.  So I physically didn't change out of this outfit in the end.  Because I wanted I desperately wanted to wear my mustard blouse, I decided to wear today's outfit the next day and skip day 9

Day 9 (repeat of outfit 8). Solid Blouse + Printed Pants + Long Necklace + Black Heels or Flats
I bought this blouse last month on sale.  August is seriously one of the best months to shop.  Everything was very on sale!   This is only the second time I've worn it.  While I never would have called 'yellow' my color.  I love it this season for some strange reason.
I swear my pants are printed!  They are a small houndstooth check. If you look on the shoe picture you get a better idea.  I had to pass on the necklace as the detail on the shirt is amazing. I like the way this outfit came together.  Not sure I would have paired with a printed pant on my own.

Day 10Cardigan + Printed Button Down + Jeans + Statement Earrings + Bright Flats
I did pretty good on today's outfit.  Cardigan, jeans, statement earrings, and bright flats, check, check, check, check.  We've already established I don't do button ups, so I chose this printed blouse.
I've established that the lighting in my new work bathroom is horrible.  Not to mention that stupid bar that cuts my legs off.  Boo.  I think this outfit looked better in real life and I actually wore it all afternoon without the cardi and liked it just as much.  I guess the shirt has enough pizzazz to stand alone!

Saturday

Saturday James and I celebrated our 9th anniversary (that is actually today!) and my MIL took both the kids overnight.  So dreamy!  I took a bath, curled my hair, and we went out for dinner.   I had been looking forward to moving my white jeans into fall.  I always thought that you put away your white after labor day but I have been reading that isn't the case anymore.  I loved how the outfit turned out.  I especially loved my curled hair.  I don't do my hair nearly enough!

Sunday

I have been waiting to recreate this look I saw on a fellow blogger (I'm talking about you Shaunacey!).  So simple yet I just loved it.  Have I mentioned before I love my denim vest that James told me I didn't need???

It was to hot to wear this most of the day so I had to take the vest off.  But I will wear this outfit again.

Also - do you know what the best part of curling your hair is?  Loose curls the next day after you've slept on them!

Day 11.  Sweater + Statement Necklace + Khaki Skirt (or Pants) + Leopard Heels

I almost didn't get dressed this day.  It was my day off and it snowed.  In September.  After my spin class I was so temped to just throw on my sweats and call it a day since the kids and I weren't really going out.  But instead I put this on.

These are the shoes I would have worn if I was working, alas, I wore my hunters all day since the weather was so ugly.

I really liked this outfit and it was super comfy. This may be the last time that I wear this sweater given Cooper banged his head and now my sweater is covered in blood. More on that later this week.

Day 12Light Blue Oxford + Statement Necklace + Printed Pants + Bright Flats

I would usually consider these pants summer pants. And let me tell you, it is not summer here anymore. Also, more on that later this week.  Since I hadn't packed them up I decided to wear them and try to make them more fall like by adding the booties and a black shirt where I would usually choose white.  I am very happy with how the outfit turned up.  An outfit I would have not thrown together without the challenge.

If I had to choose just one outfit as my favorite, it would be the red jeans and denim vest combo.  I just love the way it looks together.  A close second would be the white jeans and sweater combo.  Oddly enough, neither of those were 'challenge' outfits.

Check out the other ladies and what they wore this week.  You won't be disappointed.

Tabata

Last week, my office moved location.  I loved my old office building. I had parking in the building, I was attached to the mall, and the gym was just downstairs.  Now I park a half block away and need a jacket to access the mall 1 block away.  However, the gym makes up for all these minor inconveniences.

Here is a shot of my new office.  It has never been this clean, nor will it ever be again!

Notice the orange water bottle
The gym has a much bigger array of classes to choose from.  The first class I tried was called tabata express:
A high intensity training method that was developed for elite endurance conditioning. Work hard for 20 seconds, rest for 10 seconds. Repeat 8 times for one full Tabata. Four Tabatas in 20 minutes.
It was tough, in a good way.  I felt really insecure going.  I didn't know anyone, I didn't even know where the change room was at first. I was worried that I wouldn't be able to keep up or that it would be to hard.   This is a girl that does not like change.  I did it anyway and will keep on doing it.

Besides, now that I am not connected to the mall, I will be spending more time at the gym, so I better like it!

Lifestyle Sistas - 5 Things you may not know about me

A few of us bloggers that met during the fashion challenges have teamed up to bring you the Lifestyle Sistas series 'Our Top 5'.  For the next few months, every second Friday we will all be blogging about the same topic and we encourage you to do the same.  This week we are highlighting 5 things that you may not know about me.  Since I've been blogging for almost 7 years (yikes) there isn't much left that I haven't mentioned.  After a little thought, I did come up with a few things that you may be interested to know about me.

{one}  The year that I graduated, almost 20 years ago, I lost 75 pounds. This photo was taken part way through my journey at 15 pounds down.  It also happens to be my graduation day.

My mom was so supportive and essentially bought me anything I needed exercise related.  Step aerobics was my exercise of choice.  A new step was $100, so my mom made one for me with wood and once I proved to her I was going to use it, she bought me a real one and then we could do it together.  Her on the wood one of course!  I did step aerobics for 5 years before I moved into an apartment and I didn't think my neighbors would like it, then it turned to running.

{two}  I married my first real boyfriend.

The night we got engaged

Looking back I can see why I didn't date much.  I was the party girl.  I wanted to badly to have a boyfriend but the boys I liked never liked me back.  Looking back I can see clearly that it was because I was out at the bar too much.  Sorry Mom.  Or maybe it was fate that I would meet this cute, quiet boy, with funny long hair parted in the middle that would slowly steal my heart.

{Three}  I had my nose pierced in university.  I only took it out once I started at KPMG.  Back then, nose rings aren't all that common and my work place was very professional.  James once told my he wouldn't have dated me if I had my nose pierced when I met him.  Ironically, I took it out only a few months before our first meeting.  This was the best I could do for a picture of it... and you can't even see it.  Trust me it is there, I can see it in the original.  The photo said 'Trip to Calgary 2000'.

I still remember one of my besties, Candace, and I not telling our parents and just going and getting it done.  I remember that she made me go first and that we chose different sides to pierce.  When I got home and my mom noticed she wanted to get hers done to, she didn't, but not exactly the reaction I expected!

{four}  I only drink from a water bottle if possible, at home, at the office, on vacation.....  This started more than a decade ago.  I also drink tap water which seems to be unusual these days. I devoted a whole post to this back when I replaced one of my favorite water bottles, the rain forest one.

Taken the morning of our wedding
That bottle was around for so many years I can hardly count.  I only had one, so it rarely got washed and was used constantly.  I finally put it to rest shortly after Grady was born as it was really really getting gross.  I tried a few out and I am currently using this bottle that is sitting beside me in the office as I type this.

Anyone who knows me, know that I am not ever far from a water bottle!

{five}  I asked James if there was anything that he thought that others may not know about me and he was quick to tell me that I leave all the kitchen doors open.  I've even been known to leave the fridge door open on occasion and leaving the room..  Oooops.

This picture was not staged.  I walked into the kitchen for find four doors open.  Not an unusual circumstance in our house....

So there you have it, 5 things that you may not have known about me.  I look forward to learning a little more about you if you are interested in sharing in the comments or linking up.
