A Weekend Away

Last weekend, I was spoiled with another kidless weekend away. This time I headed east back to my hometown to attend Blaire's wedding shower.  I took an extra day to myself and spent the day in Saskatoon with these lovely ladies.

Dee, Candace, Sara, Moi

We started with lunch at Alexanders which is right down the street from where I lived in University with Sara. It was run down there and it was even more so now!  I loved living there, only 4 blocks away from the university and with some of my favorite people.  Such good memories.  Deena even suggested we hit the pedestrian light to stop traffic like we did back in the day....

Before we all went our separate ways we took a selfie with my stick.  Seriously loving my selfie stick.  Deena bought one that day and I bought one for my mom.

This was taken in the back alley of the restaurant but you cannot tell at all.
Deena and I headed to the local shops and I loved them.  I don't even know where I would take anyone to come to visit me except to the mall.  I should really try and find a few unique boutiques in my own city.

My favorite item hands down was the Made in SK shirt from hard pressed.  I'm still thinking of the floral dress and wishing I would have bought.  It was only slightly big...

Deena dropped me off at my brothers where I got to spend some time with these beauties and their brother.

First time ever they've been excited to see me and called me by name.  I've waited a long time for it!

Saturday morning Mom and I did the Summit Run first thing.  This is the second run this year we've done and I hope there are many more in the future.  But remember Mom, I may wear my ear phones next time!

The main event of the weekend was Blaire's bridal shower.  It was a lovely afternoon at Christopher lake.  Her bridesmaids did a great job of planning the games and providing fantastic snacks and drinks.  And back drop for pictures... wow.  They are going to have amazing wedding photos taken on the beach!

4 rice gals!
Saturday night after a busy day I fell asleep on the couch.  Like usual.  Madison tolerated it since apparently I didn't snore.

Every trip back home means a trip to visit Grandma.  She has a beautiful yard full of flowers and trees and takes such great care of it. It was so nice to sit back there and enjoy some sunshine and good company.

We wrapped up the trip with a visit to Dad's and Sheila. I haven't seem my Dad on fathers day in years so it was a nice to spend the afternoon with him sipping Caesars that the girls made apparently using my dad's recipe.  Yummy!

It was a short but productive trip.  I saw lots of people and had uninterrupted visits.  I got to exercise, eat cake, sleep in, and read a book.  I had to miss the kids soccer tournaments and fathers day with my hubby and I had a little Mommy guilt.  I know that there will be other years but the guilt is uncontrollable.  I have to remind myself that overall, time away is good for everyone.  The kids didn't even care I was leaving and while that may upset some, it makes me feel good.  The kids are happy to spend the time with their Dad's and they trust that I am coming back.  Seeing there smiling faces at the airport Sunday night is always my favorite part of going away!

Grady's Birthday Party - Floor Hockey... again

This year, Grady wanted a repeat of last years birthday party.  So... we invited 13 boys to play floor hockey and other sports.  I had my hands full to say the least.  Good thing I recruited a few helpers to keep the party under control!

What are the signs of a great 7 year old birthday party?

1.  A great cake.

Grady is so lucky that Nana makes his cake every year and he gets to choose the theme.  This year was Pokemon.  Obviously.

2.  Pictures with the cake and big smiles.  Preferably with the eyes open but Sara is my witness, I took no less then 15 pictures and his eyes were closed in all of them.

Except this one.  You also need a crazy picture with the cake apparently.

3.  Floor hockey.  Grady and his friends love floor hockey, and soccer, any thing that involves a little healthy competition.

4. A little brother that can keep up with the big kids.

5.  Great instructors.  This year, our birthday party coordinators were mediocre.  They were great with little Macy that wandered around and managed not to get hurt, but not so great with the boys.

Macy was all smiles running around avoiding the big kids.

6.  A table full of pokemon decorations.

7.  A themed birthday shirt.  For the record.  James and I made this one.  We are getting to be pros at making our own iron on transfers.

8.  An extra game to fill time.  Last year we didn't have this and the kids ran wild.  Pin the pokeball on the Charizard was a perfect time filler.

9.  The birthday hat.  Everyone must get a photo in the birthday hat on their birthday.  Adults included.  Our hat is well used in the summer.

10.  A family photo.

All in all it was a great celebration and Grady had a fun time and that is all that matters!  Now to rest up for Cooper's party in November.  Kids parties really are exhausting.

What I am Reading

This is what I am reading right now.

I read the first 100 pages in one sitting which is rare for me wince my time to read is limited.  I've been bringing it with me everywhere just in case I can squeeze a few minutes in to read.  This week with Grady's birthday and end of school festivities my time to read has been limited but I have every intention to finish it over the weekend.

Some preschool moms recommended Before I go to Sleep and I am Pilgrim.  Anyone have opinions on whether they enjoyed these?

I look forward to hearing what everyone else is reading!

Happy 7th Birthday Grady!

Dear Grady,

When you were born, I held you in my arms and hoped that you'd never get bigger.  I wanted to keep you my baby boy forever.  Then, inevitably, you started to grow.  You rolled over, sat on your own, crawled, walked, talked, and continued to grow up before our eyes.  Each age has been better than the last.  While I would give anything to spend a day with you again as a baby, I love the seven year old you have become.

I love how you write me random love notes.   I love how you want to snuggle on the weekend in bed when you get up.  I love hearing your little voice read me a story.  I love cheering you on as you play sports.  I love seeing you make new friends and come out of your shell.  I love that you still hug me in front of your friends.   I love so many things about you.

Each year I worry that it will be the year where it is not better than the last.  And this will not be that year.  I love your seven year old self and can't wait to see what the next year will bring.

You are a unique little boy that I am proud to call my son.

Let me tell you a little bit about your seven year old self.

You (and us!) survived your first year of hockey. We've already registered you for your first year novice for the next season.  You were the superstar of your team which was good for your confidence but not likely to continue into next year.  While you are shy with your teammates off the ice you are aggressive as heck on the ice.  You have forward written all over you!

Your spring soccer season was also a success.  You were a great player and made some great friends. While we are happy to slow down on our weekday evenings now that soccer is over, I will miss the night spent  visiting with the other parents and watching your team play.

While being very interested in sports, you have continued to develop your artistic side.  Your teachers have always commented on how detailed your drawings are you continue to practice in and outside of school.  If time allows, we hope to get you into more art lessons this winter as it is something you seem to have a natural talent for.

This year your biggest accomplish was learning to read and write.  While you started to do both last year, your confidence in grade one lead to tons of improvements. You write us random notes and read us a book every night.  I have so much respect for the teachers who teach our youngsters how to master these skills.

You are going through a stage where you want to wear quicksilver Tshirts everyday.  Truthfully, I prefer this to the hockey Tshirts.

This year, you and your  brother have decided to dress yourself every morning before you come downstairs.  That means I've lost total control over what you wear.  For the most part, you are my fashionista and put a lot of thought into your outfits.  But your idea of matching is wearing all the same color.  It was not uncommon for your to come down dressed in red from head to toe.  Socks and underwear included!

You still refuse to wear jeans.  I only make you wear them on family picture day once a year.  I try to only buy elastic waist jeans for you to encourage you to wear them but at size 7, they are becoming harder and harder to find. .

You have lost 5 teeth.  I am hoping you lose that second from tooth soon as I love the look of 2 missing teeth.

Your list of nicknames continues to grow and to be used more frequently.  'G' seems to be the most used, followed closely by Gray.   I love that I finally have little love names to call my oldest.  We all know there is no shortage of nicknames for the Coopster.

I am so happy to see you blossoming socially this year.  This has always been a concern for me.  You take a long time to warm up, especially to adults and I am thrilled to see you branch out from only your best friend.  We've had many play dates and you've been to many.  Most recently I've even seen you call out to friends you see across the school yard which is music to my ears.  It isn't something that comes naturally to you so the improvements we've seen this year make me smile.

You still make a funny tongue movements if you are shy or uncomfortable, lying, or  guilty.  It is always a dead giveaway.

We start our bedtime routing at about 8 and often I don't leave the room until 845.   If at 9pm I am still upstairs I am not a happy mama.  I need that hour of adult time to catch up on trash TV or to read my book.

You still have the odd morning where you are up in the 6s but for the most part we have moved into the 7s.  I leave for work at 640 so I never see you in the morning anymore. I miss that.

When you get up int he middle of the night to pee, you no longer wake us up to tell us, you just go.

You sleep in your underwear, just like dad and brother.

You are a meat eater.  You'll eat the side if it is rice but other than that you aren't interested.  You still turn your nose up to fruit and vegetables except you'll tolerate broccoli and corn on the cob.  I'll rub off on you one day.

You and your brother get along great one minute and hate each other the next.  You also tell each other you hate each other and and then tattle on each other.  I would say you play good together and seem to enjoy each others company more than you dislike one another.

Grady is growing his hair out.  If it was up to him it would be much longer than it is.  James refuses to let him grow it too long.  I'm indifferent.  I want him to be confident and if having long hair makes him feel good then whatever.  It actually kind of looks cute a bit longer.

If I could tell you one thing on your 7th birthday it would be to just be yourself because we love you just the way you are.

Happy 7h Birthday Grady!
Love,
Mom

Grady's 7th Birthday Questionaire

Grady's birthday has snuck up on me this year.  June has been a whirlwind of a month with travel, company, and never ending soccer.  All good things, but busy just the same!   With Grady's birthday on Wednesday, I snagged a few minutes with him to ask him my usual questionnaire.  As usual, italics are my comments.

What is your favorite food to eat? Rice Krispies.  This one has been on his favorites list for years.

Favorite treat?  Popcorn.  He gets this from James, not me.

What is your favorite song to sing? Up down funk you up.  I love that he is finally liking adult music and not just kid stuff.

What games do you like to play?  Power rangers. no, soccer.  Power Rangers?

Favorite Sport?  Soccer and Hockey.

My favorite thing to learn at school? Social studies.  Not gym?  Is Social Studies they are learning about community helpers.

A food I don't like is? Fruits and salad.  Those are my favorites!  He'll learn eventually.

My best memory is? My birthday

I love hearing his answers from year to year.  For me it was interesting to hear he wants to be a baker or chef.  He did NOT get that from me!

A Gift from Washington

As a part of our little blogging group of fashionistas, we decided to do a gift exchange.  All 12 of created an account on Elfter  where the program randomly assigns us someone to buy for without the others knowing.  The object was to send something unique to your area, which I'm sure we all interpreted differently.

I was thrilled to see this package from Joy arrive.  Technically, it arrived at my neighbours house and he walked it over, a hand delivered package!  I couldn't wait to rear into it, but I was sure to snap a picture first!

In the package I found an adorable little cosmetic bag handmade by joy herself.  I'm almost scared to actually put makeup in it as I don't want to get it dirty.  I love that she chose blue because it was my fave color.  I wish I was talented enough to make a gift rather than buy it.

She also included a pair of earrings made by Miriam Barnett, who is a friend of Joy's, but also the executive director of the YWCA, pierce county.  The way she spoke of her friend warmed my heart and is the same feeling I hope I give off when I talk about my own friends.

Finally, she included this lightweight hair scarf for summer.  I love the print and the color but I may need a tutorial on how to wear it!

The first thing I saw when I opened the package was Joy's sweet hand written note. Do you realize that we never do that anymore, write a note?  I know I don't and my terrible handwriting proves it.  Although I don't know Joy IRL, I have grown to know what kind of person Joy is through her blog which was reflected in her homemade gift to me.  She is warm, sincere, and cares deeply for her friends.  Exactly the type of person I love to be friends with.

Thank you Joy for choosing a such a unique gift for me, I will think of you each time I use the items.

IF you want to see what I bought for Sheila to represent Calgary/Canada to a Floridian (is that a word?) then head over to her blog, Making the Most of Every Day.

New Friends. Old Friends

I have been so excited to spend the weekend with Sara and her kidlets and this weekend they finally arrived.  For 2 years in a row, when her daycare closed, she would load up and bring Aiden to visit for a few days.  Then she got pregnant, had a baby, and after a 2 year hiatus she was brave enough to make the drive again and I am so glad she did.

She arrived after midnight on Friday night trying to do the majority of the drive while the kids slept.  They fooled her and stayed up past 11pm!  She put the kids to bed and we made the mistake of staying up until after 2am.  We both have early risers so we were 2 tired mamas on Saturday morning.

Aiden rises earlier than my kids so when me and my kids came downstairs on Saturday morning Aiden was waiting for them.  They were instant friends.  It was so odd.  They don't really remember each other well but they didn't miss a beat.  Pokemon was the common interest and proved to be interesting over the weekend with many trades that were made and subsequently undone. The art of negotiation.

Saturday morning routine for us is Soccer, so Macy and Aiden joined us.  Cooper played soccer.....

The rest of us went to the park.  The boys were playing on this funny slide thing and had a little accident.

Let's just say there was a lot of crying and saying their nuts were bleeding.  I'll let you imagine what happened.

We prepped the van for our crew and rotated who got to sit in the back with Sara.  It isn't often taht we have 7 people riding around in the van.

Strange things happen when you have 7 people in a van including creepy faces.

Macy is too sweet to have a creepy face.
After soccer we headed to the zoo despite the grey clouds that were threatening to open on us.

We managed to get through the penguins, the dino, and african secitions before the huge drops started.  We entered the rainforest building and by the time we were ready to leave it was pouring.  We waited for a bit but in the end decided to make a run for it.  We didn't make it.

The girls (including Macy) got separated from the boys and we didn't make it to our destination.  It was raining so hard we ran for cover, ironically just around the corner from each other.  The rain eventually cleared, we saw the butterflies and then went to the car so we didn't get rained on.  Again.

I have not mentioned James juice addiction on the blog... but he is on a health kick and is drinking cold pressed juice you can only buy at certain places, one of them being the Bridgeland market.  Since it is close to the zoo, James insisted we go there for icecream.  I had reservations about it, but we went anyway and it did not disspoint.

Grady and Aiden both chose rocky road and didn't like.  I don't know what there was to not like about it.  Heaven on a cone if you ask me.  Cooper chose plain vanilla and even it was good.  If you are in the area of the Bridgeland Market, stop for icecream.  You will not regret it.

AFter we ordered pizza, the kids had a communal bath. While they didn't actually bath all together, they may as well have.  Cooper got in first, followed by Grady, Cooper got out, Aiden got in, Grady got out and Macy got in.  And 3 out of 4 of them had a good time with the foam soap.  Can you tell??

We put on a movie called The DUFF, a typical James movie.  I don't recomend it but he claims it had good reviews.  I fell asleep on the couch as usual and James and Sara watched most of the movie.  Reminded me of when my Mom is here and I fall asleep on the couch.  I am noticing a trend.

It was a good thing I went to bed early because Sunday morning was Grady's birthday party with 13 boys.  Yes, thirteen boys.  I'll cover the party next week but let's just say it went by in whirlwind.

Right after the party Sara and I headed directly to the science center for the rest of the afternoon.  I warned her that the kids love the science center but there is a lot of standing around watching.  It was exactly as i said except I expected to be standing together.  Instead I watched these to from afar while  Cooper put on a presentation in the stage area.

And Sara watched them from the other side while Macy played in the toddler area.  So while the kids had a great time and they kicked us out when it closed at 4pm, Sara and I watched quietly from different sides of the children's play area.  {{sigh}}.

We closed out day 2 with a movie night complete with popcorn, foamies from the basement and popcorn.

If you think it was easy picking a movie with 4 kids you would be mistaken.  Macy clearly wanted Paw Patrol as she would get excited and point when we saw it on the netflix menu.  Cooper wanted Transformers, Aiden wanted Pokemon, and Grady wanted something else.  In the end, Grady won rock, paper, scissors and he chose the Pokemon movie for Aiden.  Ironically, the only kid still watching it at the end was Macy.

Monday was an odd day as my kids had school.  Sara spent the morning packing, Aiden colored, and I started this blog.  After we picked Cooper up from school and had lunch we went to the a new play center on our end of town, Joso's.   It was so quiet being an school day afternoon.  At one point we had the entire place to our self.    We spend 2 hours there, it was uninterrupted adult play time.

It was nice to have some Cooper/Aiden time.  Aiden falls right in between the ages of my boys and over the weekend he seemed to gravitate towards Grady, which is totally normal given he is the 'older' kid and the bonded over Pokemon.  When Grady was at school, the other two didn't miss a beat playing superheros and running through the play area.  Like I said, instant friends.

After we picked Grady up from school, Sara and her crew slowly packed up and started the process of leaving.  Of course we took a group shot with my new selfie stick.

I had such a good weekend.  There was crying, there was screaming, there was rain, there were early mornings.... but there was also beer (for Sara), wine (for me), popcorn and ice cream, laughs, stories, and new memories created.

While Sara is an old friend to me, I loved watching my friends develop new friendships.  New friendships that will hopefully turn into old friendships because their mamas insist on getting together a couple times a year.

I feel so fortunate to have so many great girlfriends that make the effort to come and visit me and take time out of their schedules to visit me when I am in town.  Like tomorrow.  Lucky for me, I will be spending the day in Saskatoon with a few of these important ladies.

Here's to new friends and old friends and to making new memories.
