Cooper's Birthday Interview - 8 years old

In honor of Cooper's 8th birthday last week I sat down and had a little one on one time with him asking him our annual questions.  As always, my comments are in italics.

Who is your best friend? Levi and nick.  And Bechar.   The first 2 are no surprise, they've been his BFFs for years.  The third is new in his class this year and apparently the funniest kid in his class.

What is your favorite animal? Dog.  Cause they are furry.  I think they are over this question.  Note for next year.
What is your favorite subject at school? Math.  Recess.  Gym.  No, just gym.  Math... a future accountant maybe?

What do you want to be when you grow-up?  A billionaire.  From what? Oil.  Hopefully the economy turns around for you little buddy.

Who is your favorite teacher? Ms Patrick and Ms. Mottershead.  His Grade 1 and Grade 2 teachers.  Ms Patrick is my fave teacher if you are asking me.  Which you aren't.

Who is your favorite hockey player? Crosby

Favorite team? Trails west.  And Vegas.  Cooper we have the same taste in teams.... my fave team is Trails West to!

Favorite trip this year? Kelowna, because we stayed in a mansion and all our friends came.  Insert eye roll.

What is your favorite TV show? Ricky, Nicky, Dicky, and Dawn.  My kids watch this all the time. As annoying as it is, it is a great show for kids.  Reminds me of saved by the bell for middle school.  I think Cooper just likes to say Dicky.

What is your favorite book? Guinness Book of World Records. And Big Nate.  He made that up.  He looked around the room to find a book before responding.

What makes you happy? When I get money.   So being a billionaire will make you really happy.

What makes you sad? When I get hurt.  It makes me sad to.

What is your favorite food to eat? Spaghetti and burgers.  He eats his spaghetti with only Alfredo sauce.  Yuck.

Fave restaurant? - Sushi.  So I think Kinjo will be my new favorite restaurant.  It is opening near out house this month.  Sushi... he doesn't get that from me.

Favorite treat? Original Chips.

What games do you like to play?  Dunk Shot.  Never heard of it.

Favorite Sport? Hockey and baseball.  My favorite position is defense.

A food I don't like is? Peas.  No carrots.  I'll summarize, he does not like anything that is healthy.

What are you scared of? Wind.  I had to help him here but this kid is really scared of the wind. I was to as a kid. So was Grady. I hope he outgrows it soon.

Do you have a girlfriend? I'm not answering that.  Answered after so many giggles and verifying that was actually a question written on the list. Mini teenager I tell you!

Some of his answers shock me and others not at all.  The best part is that they still love answering the questions and hearing what they said last year.  As long as they keep answering, I will keep asking!

Grady's Birthday Interview - Age 10

Someone is turning 10 this week!  In honor of Grady's birthday it is time to dust off the annual questionnaire and see how your answers have changed. As always, my comments are in italics.

Who is your best friend? Alex, Jayden, Sav and Ian.  I'm happy to see 2 new kids from school on your list.  Though one is more an old friend than a new friend since I've known his mom for years!

What is your favorite animal? Panda, I don't know. I think this will be the last year for this question.  Grady is not into animals.  Never has been.  Though I'm surprised he didn't say dog.

What is your favorite subject at school? Art.  Humanities.  Really?  It isn't an elective?  Oh yeah, its actually coding.

What do you want to be when you grow-up? What should I be?  Accountant.  No, I don't want to be an accountant.  I want to be a teacher. Art, no, gym. Where are you going to teach?  Connect.

Who is your favorite teacher? Ms, Montgomery.  This was his kindergarten teacher and truthfully a fantastic teacher.

What makes you sad? When you put me in my room.  Grady, it makes me sad as well.

What is your favorite food to eat? Burgers.  The ones from Southland Leisure Center, Mcdonalds or the Gutsy Walk. McDonalds maybe...  but the other two are questionable....

Fave restaurant? - Swiss chalet. Only Nana is willing to take him there for the chicken and ribs.

What games do you like to play?  Fortnite.  No surprise.

Favorite Sport? Hockey, I like to play center.

Favorite thing about your new school  - All the field trips!

A food I don't like is? Fruit, veggies and salad.  Will I ever get this kid eating healthy food?  How does he maintain his slim physique on mostly carbs?  I want his metabolism.

What are you scared of? Someone breaking in.  We've spent so much time talking about this and why he should be scared.  His bedroom is on the second level, we have an alarm system that will call the police...   No matter, it still causes him worry.

What do you like doing with me? Camping.  Really, I am certainly not a camper.  I thought he'd say reading.

Do you have a girlfriend? No! I had to ask!

As Grady is getting older his answers are changing so much, as are my questions.  I hope he'll enjoy reading these when he is older. I know I will!

Interview with Grady - Age 9

We spent the weekend celebrating Grady!  While I took lots of great pictures on the 'real' camera, they are stranded there until the computer desk gets sets up.  It's been 10 days since it arrived and it is still in a box in the garage.  Fingers crossed that it happens soon.

Each year I ask the kids the same set of questions to see how their answers change  some years they don't change at all and others, like this year, the differences are huge.  Let's get started.

Who is your best friend? Alex, Jayden and Ben.  This year you've added 2 new friends to our list of BFFs.  I still think that Alex is your number 1 it isn't a bad thing to have more than 1!

What is your favorite animal? Polar bear because I was studying it at school.  After years and years of hippos being his fave...

Whats your favorite subject at school? Art because I just really like it.  Glad to hear he hasn't lost his love for art.

What do you want to be when you grow-up? Engineer, I don't know why, I just want to.  This is better than other years when he chooses or hockey player or when his bother chooses YouTuber.  I'll take it.

Who is your favorite hockey player?  Patrick Kane and Pekka Rienne.  I had to look the second guy up.  Apparently, he is the Nashville goalie.  He took a liking to Nashville during the playoffs and not surprised to see he is the goalie.

What is your favorite TV show? Pokemon videos.   I have no idea where this came from.  I would have guessed YouTube but maybe that isn't a TV Show?  But it is something you watch on TV....

What is your favorite book? Big Nate and Captain Underpants.  They are very interesting.  In Captain underpants he hypnotizes the principal and a there is a villain that is a teacher.  Pretty fascinating.  His words, not mine.

What makes you happy? Having friends over.

What makes you sad? When you go away.  I'm guessing this is because I asked him the questions the day after we got back from Vegas.

What is your favorite food to eat? Pizza.  Mine too!

Favorite treat?  Slush.  See Sara, I do feed my kids Slushes!

What is your favorite song? Ed Shireen, Shape of you.  I love that they are finally into top 40!

What games do you like to play?  Hide and seek and tag.

Favorite Sport? Hockey and Soccer. Surprise, Surprise. Unchanged from last year.

When I was little I used to......? Teach my brother how to walk.

My favorite season of the year is?  Summer because that is my birthday month.

A food I don't like is? Asparagus.  He really could have summed it up with anything healthy.

My best memory is? Going to San Diego.  That he couldn't go on a baby slide and he watched the show Kipper over and over.  For the second year in a row this is what you said.  You were 3 when we went and I can't believe you remember it.

Bonus questions this year:

What are your thoughts on going to Connect school next year? Kind of sad and nervous.  Sad, because i wouldn't know any one but a few friends.

What are you looking forward to at connect ? Going on super cool field trips.

I can't believe how much your answers changed from last year. My young man is most definitely growing up....

Cooper's Birthday Interview - Age 6

Since Cooper turned 6 yesterday, it is time to complete our annual interview!  As always, my comments are in italics.

What is your favorite color?   Blue.  Same as last year.

Who is your best friend?   Nick, Levi, and Kai.  And Grady and Alex.  This guy has no shortage of friends.  We hosted 16 of his closest friends at his party yesterday.  More on that to come later.

What is your favorite animal?  Giraffe because I like their long neck.  Same as last year, its like he remembers his answers....

What is your favorite thing to do at school?  Play with the blocks. Build towers with Levi and Kai.  Cooper quickly made 2 best buddies at school and always talks about them.

What do you want to be when you grow-up? A you tuber.  I'm going to make Roblox and CSR2 videos.  My favorite you tuber is iballisticsquid.  Grady was reading what I typed over my shoulder and had to tell me it was all one word.  I guess he talks about Minecraft.  Only my child aspires to be a You tuber.  Ha!

Who is your favorite hockey player?   Sidney Crosby because he is the best player right now.  Same as last year.

What is your favorite show? Maybe YouTube.  I like Minecraft videos.  Of course you do....

What is your favorite book? Joke books.  But yet when asked his favorite joke, he tells me he doesn't know any.  If were to guess, I would say he likes his Pokemon guide books.  It has picture of all the pokemons and information on them.

What makes you happy? Playing xbox. My favorite game is Minecraft then NHL 15.  I can't argue with this.  He wants to play xbox all the time.

What makes you sad? I don't know.  When I don't have play dates.  My favorite play date is Alex, Levi and Kai.  Actually Levi since he's never been over.  That makes absolutely no sense.

What is your favorite food to eat? Jam Sandwich and macaroni.  Mom makes the best macaroni, I think you should say Christy.  At least someone thinks I am a good cook.

What is your favorite drink?  Apple juice, then milk, then chocolate milk.

What is your favorite day of the week?  What are the days of the week again.  Maybe the last one?  Last one of the weekend?

What is your favorite shirt?  The one I'm wearing right now.  Note to self, don't spend much on Cooper's wardrobe.

What are you looking forward to this year?  My birthday!

What is your favorite song to sing? I don't know.

What games do you like to play?  Gun games.  Only my son....

Favorite Sport?  Hockey.

A food I don't like is? Noodles.  Side eye. What, I don't like noodles.  I've seen you crush a bowl of spaghetti.

Cooper is such a ham and it was fun to see how many of his answers stayed the same as last year while others changed tremendously.  I love Cooper's sense of humor and can't wait to celebrate his 6th birthday with him tomorrow!

Birthday Interview - Grady, Age 8

On Friday we celebrated Grady's real birthday with BBQ'ed hot dogs and lots of junk food. I bought all the fixings for a wiener roast and then we got rained and hailed on.  Grady turned to me while we walked home from his last day of Grady 2 in the rain and asked if we could still roast hot dogs.  Sorry buddy, maybe next year.

Here is Grady's annual birthday questionnaire, my comments in italics.  You can see my answers to the same questions here.

Who is your best friend? Alex, because I see him the most.  Unchanged from last year.

What is your favorite animal? A hippo.  Unchanged.

Whats your favorite subject at school? Math because I'm really good at it.  James and I are thrilled that he loves math.  Future CPA?

What do you want to be when you grow-up? Hockey player.  The first time I asked him he said barber.  Not even a word we use at our house.  I had to hold in my chuckle.

Who is your favorite hockey player?  Patrick Kane and Mario Lemieux.  Much to James dismay he got a Patrick Kane jersey for his birthday.  While he hockey skills are on point, his life choices - not so much.

What is your favorite show? Team Titans Go.  This happened to be the show we were watching.  I would say it is YouTube.  Heck, Cooper says he wants to be a YouTuber when he grows up.  Let's see if this answer changes by his birthday in November.

What is your favorite book? Brady Brady.  Unchanged - not sure why he said this as we haven't read one in ages.  I would have said Diary of a Minecraft Zombie.

What makes you happy? When mom hugs me.  Love this!

What makes you sad? When I don't get to play xbox.  Which is most times.

What is your favorite food to eat? Burgers.

Favorite treat?  Gum.  Not my favorite since I currently have a big piece stuck in the carpet.  Fawk.

What is your favorite song to sing? I don't really sing.  I'm sexy and I know it.

What games do you like to play?  Dodge ball.  I would have guessed tether ball.

Favorite Sport? Hockey. Surprise, Surprise.

When I was little I used to? Cry.  A LOT.

My favorite season of the year is?  Winter - because there are no tornadoes.  Have I mentioned Grady's fear of natural disasters??

A food I don't like is? Salad.

My best memory is? When you were a baby and went to San Diego.  Ironically, this is my least favorite trip.  Ever.  You can read about the time our flight was cancelled and we spent 16 hours at the airport here.

I was surprised to see how many of his answers stayed the same this year.  I also wonder it I would have asked the same questions the next day how many of the answers would change.  The opinions of an 8 year old are forever changing....

About me

As part of my blog makeover, Deena put some tabs along the top, including an about me tab that has sat blank... until now.

Introducing the new 'about me' section.  Hopefully you'll learn a little more about me.  I had Deena preview it for me and she even learned a thing or 2.  And correct my grammar mistakes.  #grammarpolice

Also - she added a flavicon.  Flavicon is defined as an icon associated with a URL that is variously displayed, as in a browser's address bar or next to the site name in a bookmark list (per google).  In layman terms, it is the picture beside the website name when you open a new tab on your browser.  Look up at the tab and beside Rsquared you'll see an Rsquared symbol.  LOVE.  I had to ask Deena what it was called as I had never heard of the word flavicon before.

Ok - let's get to it.

I am a thirty something year old working Mom to 2 boys named Grady and Cooper and wife to James.  I spend much of the winter at the hockey rink cheering on the kids and the springs are spent at the soccer field where I often watch from the van since our Canadian springs tend to be too cold to stand outside without  winter gear, which I refuse to wear in May.

I like red wine, working out, laughing until I snort, and eating pizza.

Each year I ask my kids the same set of questions on their birthdays and see how their answers change each year.  Today I thought I'd answer the questions so you can get to know a little more about me.

Here we go!

What is your favorite color?   Blue.  There is a color known as  Christy Blue amongst my friends, cobalt blue to the general public,  because it is my most favorite color and was also my wedding color.

Who is your best friend?   My true blue BFF is Deena, who happens to blog @ Shoes to Shiraz.  We have been besties since Deena first asked to play with me on the first day of Kindergarten. She was still friends with me after I peed under the carpet during play time that same year because I was too scared to ask to go to the bathroom.  It was meant to be.

What is your favorite animal?  I like jack rabbits.  People with gardens don't like them since they eat the veggies, but since I am not a gardener, I love coming home and finding one snoozing in my back yard.  I've never had a pet, unless you count the turtles we gave back to the pet store after a year.

What is your favorite thing to do at school?  I'm going to modify this for an adult and tell you what I do for work.  I went to university and got a Commerce degree with a major in Accounting.  I then pursued my Chartered Accountant (CA) designation and passed the final exam in the top 50 of the country! Yeah, I was pretty surprised to.  Now I do financial reporting at an oil and gas company 4 days a week. On my day off I pretend to be a stay at home mom - it is the best of both worlds.

What do you want to be when you grow-up?  When I was growing up, I wanted to be a hair dresser, then a teacher.  Now, my dream job would be a fitness instructor but I'm pretty sure that doesn't pay well.  Who doesn't want to get paid to work out?

Who is your favorite hockey player?   Jarome Iginla.  I wish he would have stayed in Calgary.  Truthfully, I don't really have one but when you have 2 hockey crazed boys that always ask you who your favorite player is you have to have one.

What is your favorite show? Currently I am binge watching Parenthood on Shomi.  LOVE!  I also have Greys Anatomy, Scandal, Big Brother Canada, and Dancing with the Stars programmed on my PVR.  James and I also watch the Goldbergs, Modern Family, and Big Bang Theory together.  Wow, that is a lot of TV when you see it listed out.

What is your favorite book? Memoirs of a Geisha.  Only book I've ever reread.

What makes you happy?  Smiling kids. Hugs from my husband.  A full social schedule.  Cheering at hockey games.  Drinking Wine.

What makes you sad? Not having time to do all I want to do each day.

What is your favorite food to eat? Pizza and burgers!

What is your favorite song to sing? I Like Big Butts from back in the day.  No one in my house likes it when I sing unfortunately.  You have it in your head now don't you?

What games do you like to play?  I'm not a games person at all.  If I had to choose, I'd say Scrabble.  Before kids, James and I played often. He always won.  I think he was cheating.

Favourite Sport?  I don't really watch or play sports. I prefer spin and barre classes for exercise.

When I was little I used to... take my care free life for granted.

A food I don't like is?   Calamari.  James helped me with that one.  Truthfully I am kind of a picky eater.  While I have come along way there are just certain things I have no interest in even trying.  Calamari is one of them.

You can see my kids answers to the same questions here and here.

Now that you know a little more about me, leave me a comment and tell me a little about YOU!

Cooper's 5th Birthday Interview

Cooper has been asking when his birthday was since the day after Grady's. He doesn't really care about being older, he wants presents.   So as you can imagine, he was thrilled to learn that his birthday is finally this weekend.  We are having his party on his actual birthday since it is on the weekend and he is super pumped.  As am I.  I love the kids birthdays more than my own.  In honor of his 5th birthday, I asked him the same set of questions I ask every year.  As usual, italics are my comments.

What is your favorite color?   Blue, then red.

Who is your best friend?   Alex, Grady, Carson, Beckham, Madina.  Oh yeah, Nicholas Noah and Mikey.  Apparently every friend is a best friend.

What is your favorite animal?  Giraffe because they have tall necks.  It has always been his fave.  Truthfully, neither of our kids are animal kids.  They don't really like the zoo and are hardly interested in pets.

What is your favorite thing to do at school?  ABC Book.  Grady gave him this answer.  At school they work on an alphabet all year doing one letter a week.  I thought he'd say snack time.

What do you want to be when you grow-up? Hockey Player.

Who is your favorite hockey player?   Sidney Crosby because he is good.  This is new this year.  Not sure how that was chosen.

What is your favorite show? Star wars.  The kids haven't seen the actual movie.  He watches it on the ipad and some cartoon version on netflix.  James can't wait to watch the movies with them.  I on the other hand have never seen them and don't care if I ever do.  Over the past few months I've learned more way aobut star wars then I ever cared to.  Did you know Anakin Skywalker turns into Darth Vader?

What is your favorite book? Goodnight Darth Vader.

What makes you happy? Getting book orders and getting toys like hockey toys and stuff.  We have ordered book orders (that are actually toys) 2 times in a row so very exciting around here.  And what kid doesn't like getting toys.

What makes you sad? If somebody took all my toys.   He likes getting them, not losing them.

What is your favorite food to eat? Ketchup Chips.  He would eat them all day everyday if I let him.  Thankfully it is a flavor I don't care for.

What is your favorite song to sing? Shut up and Dance with Me.  I love that the kids have finally gotten into top 40 music!

What games do you like to play?  DC super friends.  Xbox minecraft and Xbox lego batman.  We do not have an xbox but the kids have been asking for one.  James refuses.

Favorite Sport?  hockey, then basketball.  Not basketball, baseball because I always think to play baseball.  He's never played baseball.

When I was little I used to? Cry.  You did.  But not as much as your brother.

A food I don't like is? Peas.  I happened to be eating peas while asking him the questions.

Most of his answers changed this year.  Both kids were really into the question game.  I hope their enthusiasm continues!

Let the countdown continue... 2 sleeps!

Cooper's Birthday Questionnaire - Age 4

In honor of Cooper's 4th birthday I asked him a few questions so I will always remember what he liked as a 4 year old.  His answers were interesting and mostly unexpected.

Italics are my comments.

What is your name? Cooper James Renton

How old are you turning? 4

What is your favorite color? Blue, green, yellow.  No, not green.  I would have said his fave color was green.

Who is your best friend? Beckham.  And Colin.  Both are his friends from school.  I love that he is making friends at school.

What is your favorite animal? Giraffe.  No, big fat hippo.  Remember when they were suntanning that time at the zoo?

What do you want to be when you grow-up? Nascar driver.  I hope not.

Who is your favorite hockey player?  Joel.  Soon to be uncle Joel.  I love that he chose Joel as his fave.

What is your favorite show? Nascar.  And hockey.  I would have guessed Sponge Bob.

What is your favorite book? Nascar and Hockey.

What makes you happy? Lollipops.  He happened to be eating one when I asked him.

What makes you sad? When I get hurt.

What is your favorite food to eat? Hot dogs, burgers, jam sandwich.  Not what I would have guessed but he really loves jam sandwiches.

Favorite treat?  lollipop.

What is your favorite song to sing? Humpty Dumpty.  I'm pretty sure we've never sung this with him. School maybe?

Favorite Sport? Hockey. Soccer. Tennis. volleyball, basketball. Hockey.

When I was little I used to? Play hockey.  When you were a baby?  Yeah, a baby referee.

A food I don't like is? Cheese Sandwich.

There is obviously a theme of Nascar and Hockey.  By far, his favorite presents were the $4 nascars he got.  He played with those things like crazy.  We actually had to force him to open the rest of his presents once the nascars had been opened.  What a kid!

I know I will love seeing how these answers change next year!

Grady's 6th birthday is tomorrow.  Tomorrow.  We've been so busy this spring that his birthday literally snuck up on us.  Despite the craziness of this month, I sat our birthday boy down to ask him his yearly questions.

What games do you like to play?  He didn't come up with anything

Favorite Sport? Hockey. Surprise surprise.

My favorite thing to learn at school? Centers.  These are generally tables set up with different activities and the kids can choose what they want to do.

When I was little I used to? Poop.  True that!

My favorite season of the year is?  Winter because there is a skating rink at westside.

A food I don't like is? Peas

My best memory is? When I turned 4.  I have no idea what made this birthday so special.  Not sure he understood the question.

I love hearing the answers straight from his mouth.  Some surprise me and some not.  You can tell more and more that his friends are becoming important to him and he is developing interests similar to his friends.  It will be interesting to see if this stays the same next year.

Cooper's Birthday Questionaire - Age 3

With Cooper's birthday fast approaching it it time for Cooper's first annual birthday questionnaire!  I was curious what his answers would be.  While some were expected, others were surprising!

What is your name? Cooper

How old are you turning? Tree aka Three

What is your favorite color? Green.  (I would have guessed orange or blue)

Who is your best friend? Grady.  Quickly followed by the neighbor kids. (I love that he lists Grady as his best friend.  I'm not so sure Grady would do the same)

What is your favorite animal? Giraffe. (This I expected)

What is your favorite show? Car crash (I have no idea what that is. We watch tons of shows and this is the answer he gives? Even Grady was confused by this answer and encouraged him to name a normal show.  Nope.  He wanted it to be car crash)

What is your favorite book? Monkey book (This is one of those books from Costco that has 5 stories all combined into one hard cover book. This particular one is about the 5 little monkeys and we do read it a lot.  Especially the one about making a birthday cake for Mom)

What makes you happy? Grady (ahhhhhhhh.....)

What makes you sad? Mom (I'm hoping that he didn't understand the questions.  Seriously, I make you sad??)

What is your favorite food to eat? Grilled Cheese (Not that surprising but I would have guessed cereal)

What is your favorite song to sing? Cars 2 (We seriously sing the opening song to the cars move 'Real Gone' almost every night. Some nights he asks for the Planes song and I have to make one up)

What games do you like to play? Treasure game (this was a favorite of Grady's to but we don't play it all that much)

A food I don't like is? Salad (Grady helped him on that. Sometimes when I eat my salad they want me to sit as far away from them as possible.  Most adults think my salads are super yummy.  Not my kids though... I'm still working on them!)

I can't wait to see how the answers change next year!

It took a few attempts to get him to sit still long enough to answer the questions this year.  Maybe I'll have more success next year.

We are on birthday countdown with 4 sleeps to go.  Today is Nana's birthday (HAPPY BIRTHDAY NANA!) and Grady knows his birthday is next.  It is going to be a few long days for our almost 4 year old...
