I had penciled in this past Saturday as the day we put up the tree. I literally put it in my calendar to make sure I didn't forget. If it makes it into the calendar it somehow gets done. I'm a creature of habit... the tree goes up the last weekend of November since I insist on taking it down before the 31st. I like to start the new year with a clean house. On a side note, I also finish all my Christmas shopping by Dec 1 so I can sit in front of the tree and wrap while watching trashy TV.
This particular Saturday, Grady had hockey at 7:15 am and Cooper didn't have his game until noon. I figured that in between ice times, James and I would work at getting the tree up and the bins ready and then after Cooper's game we would tackle the decorating.
To my surprise as I brought the bins up the kids started digging through them. Grady, in particular, insisted he wanted to decorate the tree that exact moment. No waiting. I sat there in my pajamas and with my bed head and decided to go with it. Grady's enthusiasm was contagious, we put on the Christmas tunes and started decorated just the way we were. Even if some of us were still in our underwear and other were wearing sweaty long johns.
You see, we don't have a fancy tree. We have a tree full of memories. Some we bought on vacation, some were purchased just because, some are even homemade. The homemade ornaments are becoming more and more apparent on our tree as the kids get older.
James' job is always to put on the star. We decorate the tree with the lights off. When the tree is fully decorated, we make a wish and turn on the tree. It has come to my attention that this may not be normal, just how I did it growing up.
Cooper was such a ham. Not only was he in his underwear, but he stopped to pose with a goofy face for each action shot I tried to take. This is just totally him. A big goof ball.
There was also some risk taking going on while making sure that our tree was evenly decorated all the way around.
It is amazing how quickly I turned from the Grinch to an elf. Watching the kids embrace a tradition that I value so much made my heart grow 3 sizes. I couldn't help looking at James and mouthing that I was so happy. For each ornament that they squealed about my smile got bigger. Each time they squealed that they remember buying the ornament it reminded me that it is worth every penny. While James gives me a hard time when I make him look for ornaments on vacation I am sure that he loves pulling them out of the box as much as I do. So in the matter of hours I went from to being ready to fully embrace Christmas and all the holiday season has to offer.
And the final product....
Bring on Christmas!
