One of the biggest pros was getting to know the parents. I was the focal point of the team. Yes everyone knew the coaches but if they had any questions they always came to me. What I really wanted out of the hockey season was for it to be a social experience for the parents as well. Because I put myself out there I got that. I often didn't see much of the game as I would be going around collecting things (usually money) and doing parent reminders. Grady understood that I was the team manager and I actually think he liked it.
I also had a lot of say over when the games and social events were which means we didn't miss any! This was a huge pro as Grady was able to participate in all the events and I was able to choose activities that I knew he enjoyed and hoped the other kids would to.
The only part of being manager I didn't like was the game management. I had to work with other managers to arrange games. As I mentioned above, I also got to choose when the games were which sometimes proved to be frustrating as I didn't really know what the coaches wanted or even if they would be there to coach. One game only one coach was there and we had to recruit some dads to help out. This would have been fine had I known more than 1 day ahead of time!!!
Next year we will have 2 hockey players in our house and I've already decided that I will volunteer to manage Coopers team. I will help with Grady's team by being the social coordinator or the treasurer but at the novice level, I think the focus of the manager is heavily based on game planning. Not my thing.
I figure that now that I know how to manage a timbit team I should put that knowledge to good use for at least one more year. And I'd be lying if I said I didn't enjoy having the insight on what was going on with the team!
The parents on Grady's team were great. They were constantly thanking me and telling me that I was doing a good job. I learned that I don't take compliments well. While it was great that they were encouraging, I often felt uncomfortable with all the flattery, after all it wasn't really that time consuming once I learned what I was doing!
This past weekend was Grady's wrap up party and he finally got that trophy he had been waiting for. He was buzzing with excitement when the first trophy came out of the bag. And that smile is the reason that I volunteered to be team manager and to be a part of the hockey community.
